Design Build
Tritech believes there are several advantages to owners who utilize the design build system over traditional delivery systems. Design build, today considered an alternative option for project delivery, was originally the standard method of project delivery for construction projects. However, more recently, owners have been utilizing the conventional method of project delivery called the engineer-bid-build system or fixed-price sealed bid. As technology advances the design-build alternative is anticipated as the future for project delivery in the water and wastewater infrastructure sectors, as it can achieve significant savings of time and money.
As a project delivery mechanism the design build system is unique when compared to the traditional engineer-bid-build system. The traditional method of project delivery has its advantages, providing an acceptable format for standard or less-complicated projects. Design build is suited to complex or diverse projects. It accommodates a more creative and innovative approach that has been proven to be a reliable approach that often provides the opportunity to incorporate state-of-the-art technology while still being cost-efficient. In design build, the owner has a single point of contact for the duration of the project, and a single point for accountability.
Design build considers factors beyond price such as judgment, technical knowledge, expertise, and experience. Design build requires an integrated team of designers and contractors to work collaboratively for a common goal which contrasts with the traditional system of project delivery. Design build is particularly impactful in overcoming any lack of cooperation between the consultant and the general contractor due to professional adversity that could negatively impact on-time and on-cost project delivery.
Design build brings forward a positive team approach that dissolves adversarial boundaries, resulting in a more positive situation for both the owner and contractor. While generally involving more owner participation, design build delivery reduces actual administration time and documentation, thus reducing cost.
